SPRINGFIELD — Speaking to a House subcommittee Wednesday on behalf of 12 of the state’s 13 NCAA Division I schools — all except Chicago State — University of Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said he opposed any bill that would allow sports betting on collegiate athletics in Illinois.

Two series left for Illini with two bids in sight

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois baseball has crafted a legitimate NCAA tournament résumé this season.

The Illini's play in the last month, including four straight Big Ten series wins to reach 31-16 overall and 10-8 in the conference, has also helped ensure all the work Dan Hartleb's team put in during the first half of the season wasn't for naught.

Despite rough finish, Illini take series from Hoosiers

CHAMPAIGN — Dan Hartleb added a new wrinkle of situational baseball during Illinois' weekend series against No. 19 Indiana. The Illini coach has revamped how he approaches the designated hitter and started junior pitcher Ty Weber in that spot Sunday against the Hoosiers.

For the second time in three games.

Former Central standout Gordon turns into potential pro

CHAMPAIGN — "Big Oak" resurfaced in Champaign-Urbana on Friday.

That's Tanner Gordon — or it was, at least, when he was pitching for Champaign Central.

"Tanner was a big, strong kid," said Maroons coach John Staab, who revealed his former pupil's high school nickname. "Kind of like an oak tree on the mound."

Strong pitching helps Illini seize series win ahead of finale with Hoosiers

CHAMPAIGN — The numbers expressed a potentially dangerous picture for Illinois baseball.

Entering a three-game Big Ten Conference set at Illinois Field, No. 19 Indiana possessed the league's top slugging percentage and most runs scored, in addition to leading the nation in home runs.

Through two dates, however, the host Illini have made the Hoosiers look mortal.

Fisher pitches Illini to ranked win

CHAMPAIGN — Andy Fisher got the Illinois baseball team off to the perfect start.

The left-hander tossed eight shutout innings Friday night and the Illini cashed in for a 4-0 victory over No. 19 Indiana at Illinois Field, marking the eighth win for Illinois in the past 10 conference games.

URBANA — More than 35 years after his time at Champaign's Jefferson Junior High in the late 1960s, Mike Kiser was back in C-U and ran into his old PE teacher, Richard Freehill.

BOB and JODY GORDON, who have traveled the country this spring to cheer on their baseball-playing son TANNER, won't need to gas up to watch him pitch Saturday.

The Indiana Hoosiers right-hander is scheduled to start against the Illini in Champaign.

Simeon OL decommits from Lovie's next class

Illinois football started Sunday with three commits in the Class of 2020, but that number was at two by Sunday night.

Chicago Simeon offensive lineman Marcus Harper, who committed to Lovie Smith's program on April 7, announced via a note posted to his Twitter account on Sunday night he was decommitting from the Illini.
