CHAMPAIGN — Erica Lynn and Kathleen Knight each won two individual events, but Illinois lost 169-131 to Northwestern in the season-opening meet Friday at ARC Pool.
Lynn won the 100-yard and 200 breaststrokes, and Knight claimed the 100 and 200 butterflies.
In the 100 breast, Lynn was clocked in 1:05.63. In the 200 breast, she was timed in 2:21.32.
Knight finished in a career-best 57.13 seconds in the
100 fly and 2:04.19 in the 200 fly.
“I thought we competed really well,” UI coach Sue Novitsky said. “It was a back-and-forth meet, and we have talked about staying competitive. We did that today.”
In men’s cross-country:
Donohue shines. UI sophomore Mark Donohue earned third place Friday at the Illini Open, finishing the 8-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 2 seconds. Teammate David Eckhart was clocked in 26:05.
The Illini also had two unattached runners. Freshman Will Brewster took first in 25:48, and classmate Luke Carroll finished in 25:57.
Monticello product Brad Butler, an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois and running unattached, was eighth in 26:44.
In women’s cross-country:
Falsey leads way. UI sophomore Colette Falsey won the 5K race in 18:46, and teammate Rachel Irion was third in 19:00.
The Illini finished second with 36 points, three behind Bradley.
Monticello product Kelsey Hardimon, running for Eastern Illinois, was seventh. Arcola product Brittany Arthur, running unattached, was 10th.
In women's tennis:
Doubles duo opens with win. Illinois' Misia Kedzierski and Allison Falkin won their first-round doubles match at the ITA Midwest Regional at Atkins Tennis Center.
