Rantoul Scrimmage Analysis
Beat writer Bob Asmussen’s observations from Monday’s scrimmage in Rantoul (for more, check out his blog)
WILL THE THRILL
Chase Daniel might have a problem on Aug. 31. He’ll be wearing a white No. 81 jersey. Senior Will Davis picked up right where he left off last season, getting credited for three sacks and causing the quarterbacks all sorts of problems.
WILL THE THRILL II
Going into his senior season, receiver Will Judson appears ready to make a major contribution. The transfer from Florida A&M has always had the talent, but those in the program will tell you he is gaining the needed confidence. He had four nifty catches for 53 yards Monday, taking hard hits and hanging onto the ball.
THE X FACTOR
Xavier Fulton scared the coaches and himself, leaving the game with a leg injury. Fulton will be fine, Ron Zook said. Fulton is the lineman the Illini can least afford to lose. Hard to believe he was a defensive linemen 18 months ago.
COOL IN THE POCKET
Not Juice Williams, but his 11-month-old daughter, LaChez. After the scrimmage, while Williams was being interviewed by a mob of reporters, LaChez cooly looked on from her dad’s arms. No crying. No squirming. Just a pleasant, calm child.
THEY’LL BE BACK
Ron Zook admitted to being nervous before the scrimmage. He didn’t want to see any of his players get hurt. After a mostly healthy night, the coach will happily schedule a Rantoul High School scrimmage in 2009. The place was packed. On a Monday night. And folks stuck around 30 minutes afterward for autographs and to say hello.
