Ask former Illini coach Mike White about Benn here
CHAMPAIGN – Arrelious Benn isn't thinking about the 2010 draft. He promises.
"I haven't thought ahead," the Illinois junior receiver said. "I just take it one day at a time. The NFL is going to be there. Anyone who thinks ahead in that type of process is not doing what they need to do. I think that's selfish toward your team, selfish toward your teammates and selfish toward yourself."
The junior receiver said he will make a decision about his NFL future "when the time is right."
Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. thinks that time will be next April.
"A very good player," Kiper said. "When you look at Benn and you look at the underclassmen receivers, that is a loaded group. That's as talented as it gets from that particular class."
The 2010 class of receivers figures to include Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant, Southern Cal's Damian Williams, Georgia Tech's Demarius Thomas and Desmond Briscoe of Kansas.
"I put Dez Bryant one, Damian Williams two and I have Benn three right now," Kiper said.
Benn likes hearing the kind words.
"It's a compliment and it's a blessing also to be there," Benn said. "You work hard for it. Mel Kiper has seen a lot of players. For him to speak that level of me, it's great. But at the same time, I'm focused on here right now. If I want to make that decision with my family and with Coach (Ron) Zook later on down the road, I will. I'm happy here."
Walterfootball.com ranks Benn even higher in its 2010 mock draft than Kiper, listing Benn No. 2 overall behind only Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford. The Web site has Cleveland picking the Illinois receiver. Dez Bryant is the 31st picked in the mock draft.
Draftempire.com has Benn going third in the 2010 draft to San Francisco. NFLhouse.com has Benn going 15th overall to Houston.
