Tulsa co-defensive coordinator Ron West is joining the Illinois staff, a source close to the program said Sunday. The official announcement is expected Monday.

West fills the spot vacated by Curt Mallory, who became the defensive coordinator at Akron. West will coach the outside linebackers and Dan Disch will work with the inside linebackers.

West has ties to new Illinois defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, working with him at Clemson. The Tigers were highly ranked nationally during their time together at Clemson.

Other coaching stops for West include Tulane, North Texas, Texas Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette and Baylor.

A former offensive lineman at Clemson, West has coached both offense and defense. He served as an offensive line coach at North Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor.

West and his wife, Becky, have two adult children, Brad and Lori.
