Illinois has hired longtime NFL assistant Mike Gillhamer to coach defensive backs, a source told HQ.

Gillhamer visited the Illinois campus last week. He fills the spot vacated by Dan Disch, who is now the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss,

Gillhamer worked with the Carolina Panthers from 2004-10. Before that, he was with the New York Giants for four seasons.

Gillhamer also has extensive experience as a college assistant, working at Louisville, Oregon, Rutgers, Nevada, Utah and San Jose State. He was going to be a part of Ron Turner's first staff at Illinois, but instead took a job with the Giants.

With Gillhamer working in the secondary at Illinois, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will now be with the linebackers.

Looks to be another excellent coaching hire by Coach Zook. Thanks also AD Guenther for the funds to land this highly qualified DB coach. Welcome aboard - Go Illini!

Tremendous hire by the Zooker.

Man this will make even more of a star out of former player of the year from East St. Louis!

With Sanni coming back and all of the talent in our secondary and those coming in this is a huge upgrade.

This will also be huge for recruiting DB's as who would not want to be coached by a former NFL defensive coach and how he can prepare them for a career in the NFL.

Again fabulous hire Zooker!
