Illinois has hired longtime NFL assistant Mike Gillhamer to coach defensive backs, a source told HQ.
Gillhamer visited the Illinois campus last week. He fills the spot vacated by Dan Disch, who is now the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss,
Gillhamer worked with the Carolina Panthers from 2004-10. Before that, he was with the New York Giants for four seasons.
Gillhamer also has extensive experience as a college assistant, working at Louisville, Oregon, Rutgers, Nevada, Utah and San Jose State. He was going to be a part of Ron Turner's first staff at Illinois, but instead took a job with the Giants.
With Gillhamer working in the secondary at Illinois, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning will now be with the linebackers.
