The starting punter battle is settled, Justin DuVernois getting the starting job when Matt Eller left the program (read about it here). Here are three other positions that need to be decided for Illinois before the opener Sept. 3 against Arkansas State, courtesy Bob Asmussen:
Offensive tackle — Michael Heitz and Simon Cvijanovic are competing for the job opposite Jeff Allen, with Heitz holding an advantage
Safety — With Trulon Henry at outside linebacker, Steve Hull, Patrick Nixon-Youman and Supo Sanni will fill two starting spots
Receiver — A.J. Jenkins is being pushed by Ryan Lankford, Darius Millines and Spencer Harris, but they will all play a lot
