Since Tim Beckman won't tell us, we turned to Bob Asmussen for tips about what the Illini will offer when they take the field Sept. 1.
I think the Illini will come out throwing. A lot more than in 2011. Tim Beckman's final Toledo team averaged 268 passing yards per game. Illinois averaged 184 yards in Ron Zook's final season.
I think Jon Davis is going to like the new offense. The tight end from Louisville was the star of Camp Rantoul. Don't be surprised if he catches 10 balls in the opener. At least.
I think Miles Osei will throw a pass, catch a pass and run with the ball. All in the first quarter. He played everything but offensive tackle during Camp Rantoul and will have a big role.
I think the offensive line that starts against Western Michigan won't be the same one that starts against Arizona State.
Lots of shuffling as Luke Butkus looks for the best five. A guess for the opener: Hugh Thornton (tackles), Michael Heitz (tackle), Graham Pocic (guard), Alex Hill (guard) and Jake Feldmeyer (center). But please, don't make any wagers on that lineup.
I think Justin DuVernois will be the starting punter. But he needs to be consistent in the opener to keep his job. The hunch here is that he learned from last season.
