Jim Rossow's Big Ten report: Will Illini crush Boilers' dreams?

Sports editor Jim Rossow's weekly look around the league:

THE STANDINGS
LEADERS DIVISION
TEAM                LEAGUE   PF    PA    OVERALL   PF    PA
Ohio State    6    0    248    170    10    0    399    239

THE SCHEDULE
Want to know which of Saturday’s games are worth your time? Here’s the dirt from sports editor Jim Rossow, who lost 22 pounds after a 2-3 week:

Iowa at No. 23 Michigan
11 a.m., ESPN

How bad are the Hawkeyes? This is the first ranked team they’ve played, and they’re still bringing up the rear in the Legends Division. The good news is Iowa has won three in a row against Michigan, its longest streak in series history.
Rossow’s pick: Michigan, 28-0

Northwestern at Michigan State
11 a.m., ESPN2

Spartans’ last six games have been decided by four points or less, the longest streak by a Division I team since at least 1996. Mark Dantonio used to win the close ones — 9-1 in games decided by 10 points or less in 2010 and ‘11 — but not this fall (3-4). Northwestern knows the feeling, having blown late leads against Penn State, Nebraska and Michigan.
Rossow’s pick: Northwestern, 21-20

Indiana at Penn State
11 a.m., BTN

Not only are the Hoosiers 0-15 against the Nittany Lions, rarely have they given them a game (average margin of defeat: 16.3 points). It’s really bad at Beaver Stadium, where Penn State has won the teams’ six games by an average of 25 points.
Rossow’s pick: Penn State, 35-10

No. 6 Ohio State at Wisconsin
2:30 p.m., WICD (ABC)

Good news for the Buckeyes: Urban Meyer is 32-2 when having more than one week to prepare for an opponent, winning his last 11 in a row. Good news for the Badgers: They’ve snapped long Ohio State winning streaks before (a 19-gamer in 2003 and a 13-gamer in ‘58). Only Michigan has stopped more double-digit Ohio State winning streaks (three) than Bucky.
Rossow’s pick: Ohio State, 28-27

Purdue at Illinois
2:30 p.m., BTN

Trophy games aren’t good business for the Illini, who have lost three of them in a row and are underdogs in their season-ending grudge matches for the Cannon (Saturday) and the Land of Lincoln Trophy (Nov. 24). That would make it seven times in the last 10 seasons the Illini went the fall without getting their hands on a single trophy (Illibuck included).
Rossow’s pick: Purdue, 35-5

Minnesota at No. 16 Nebraska
2:30 p.m., BTN

Jerry Kill rarely gets frazzled in front of hostile crowds. He’s 54-52 in road games, including 2-2 this season. He’ll need to be a genius to end Minnesota’s 15-game losing streak against the Cornhuskers, who last lost to the Gophers in Lincoln in 1960 (Kill was born in ‘61).
Rossow’s pick: Nebraska, 42-10

LOOKING AHEAD
Coaches like to take it one game at a time. Not us:
NOV. 23
Nebraska at Iowa    11 a.m. (WICD)

NOV. 24
Illinois at Northwestern    11 a.m. (BTN)
Michigan at Ohio State    11 a.m. (WICD)
Indiana at Purdue    11 a.m. (BTN)
Wisconsin at Penn State    2:30 p.m. (WICD)
Michigan State at Minnesota    2:30 p.m. (BTN)

THE LISTS

ILLINOIS MVP
ILLINI    PREVIOUS

Mason Monheim  —
Mike Svetina    —
Justin DuVernois    —
Earnest Thomas    —
Zach Becker    —
Rossow’s take: DuVernois (40.2) is one of only six Illini to average 40-plus yards in his career, joining Steve Weatherford (43.5), Steve Fitts (41.7), Ryan Tabloff (40.9), Anthony Santella (40.8) and Bill Brown (40.3).

IN THE PENTHOUSE
(Big Ten MVP)

PLAYER, SCHOOL    PREVIOUS
Braxton Miller, Ohio State    1
Taylor Martinez, Nebraska    2
Montee Ball, Wisconsin    —
Devin Gardner, Michigan    —
Matt McGloin, Penn State    4
Rossow’s take: With a big game at Wisconsin, Miller (1,166 yards rushing) can move past Michigan’s Denard Robinson (1,176 in 2011) and Indiana’s Antwaan Randle El (1,270 in ‘00) to No. 2 on the Big Ten’s single-season list for rushing yards by a quarterback. Robinson holds the No. 1 spot (1,702 in ‘10).

IN THE DOGHOUSE  (BIG TEN GOAT)
FAN NON-FAVORITE    SCHOOL

Run defense    Indiana
Kirk Ferentz    Iowa
Co-coordinators    Illinois
Prevent defense    Northwestern
Refs    vs. Penn State
Rossow’s take: Nebraska’s wins against Michigan State and Penn State were made possible by iffy calls by officials. QB Matt McGloin intimated the men in stripes never will treat the Nittany Lions the same after the Sandusky scandal. His coach was more levelheaded. “I would tell our fans that nobody is against Penn State,” Bill O’Brien said. “It’s a free country and Matt can say what he wants, and that’s what he did.”

COACH OF THE YEAR
COACH, SCHOOL    PREVIOUS
Urban Meyer, Ohio State    1
Bo Pelini, Nebraska    3
Jerry Kill, Minnesota    —
Bill O’Brien, Penn State    4
Kevin Wilson, Indiana    2
Rossow’s take: Never doubt Meyer’s motivational skills. To further fire up what will be a riled-up Ohio Stadium for next week’s game against Michigan, the Buckeyes will welcome back members of the 2002 national championship team.

BOWL LINEUP
TEAM    BOWL
Nebraska    BCS
Michigan    Capital One
Wisconsin    Outback
Northwestern    Gator
Minnesota    TicketCity
Rossow’s take: Cornhuskers (48) tops in the Big Ten for most bowl games, followed by Penn State (44), Ohio State (43) and Michigan (41). Only the Nittany Lions, however, have a winning record.

why is Nathan allowed to sport those crosses of eyeblack during games?......this isn't Wheaton College

illini94 wrote on November 16, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Amen to that!

He looks like a fool.

Perhaps Little Nathan's crosses will keep him from being crushed by the inept offensive line (and play calling). Great comment on Wheaton College though; probably where he belongs.
