Illini grade vs. Northwestern: F

Marcus Jackson breaks down Saturday's 50-14 loss to Northwestern:

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Kain Colter, Northwestern.
The quarterback did it all, rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown while completing 9 of 11 passes for 102 yards and a career-high three TDs.

Illinois D
Northwestern A
The Illini got off t
o a promising start, but four turnovers and shuffling quarterbacks didn’t work out while amassing 242 yards of total offense.

Illinois F
Northwestern B-

The Wildcats picked up 450 yards of total offense and bullied the Illini up front, rushing for 359 yards in a punishing performance.

Illinois D
Northwestern B

A fumble on a kickoff return sucked the life out of the Illini. Northwestern never had to punt and got a pair of field goals from Jeff Budzien.

Illinois F
Northwestern A

Illinois is trying to build this rivalry with Northwestern into a real thing, but it doesn’t help when you get blasted. Some serious changes must be made if this thing has any chance of turning around.

Believe Tim Beckman just flunked out of U of I after today's final test of season.

Beckman just wasn't cut out for the Big Ten. Time to go back to mid-majors.

I think Ilini were the 7th best defense in country last year; Thomas hired a person who has been a devensive coordinator. We did not lose many defensive players off last years team. One can deduct that Beckman knows nothing about defense and even less about football. Beckman is a joke and because Thomas gave him a five year contract, I suggest Illini fans get used to losing badly. Perhaps next year we should all wear clown costumes to the games because at best Illini will be 2-10 again and last in Big Ten.

When Zook arrived here, Illini had zero talent. It is unfair to compare Zook to Beckman as this Illini team has talent. Zook looks like a genius compared to this joke of a coach. After 11 games, Beckman could not get this team to even compete today. I feel sorry for our student althletes, they deserve better than Thomas provided.

An awful and pitiful season finally ends but more to come next year unless major changes made soon.

how bad do you have to be to make Zook look like a genious? He did not even know the scores of the games as they were going on....even with the stadium scoreboard in full view!!!!!

"wear clown costumes next year"????  So you're still going to pay $60-$80/tix to watch somemore of this BS?  I'm guessing lots of folks have already decided to not bother going to games next year.  Worst coached team I've seen in MS going back to 1973.

MJ: I'm thinking an overall F-minus might be more appropriate, with maybe an F-minus-minus for the coaching staff. Cringed when Beckman got steamrollered by a ref, who dropped a penalty flag next to Beckman's prone body as he ran by...

To quote Mike Thomas last year concerning Zook and Weber :  " I'll make an assessment after the end of the season" .Well, the football season is officially over and Mike Thomas has some critical problems to address.

The critical problems are:   First,  how to rebuild some confidence in the Illini football program among athletes and fans.  Second,  how to avoid having 35,000 empty seats in Memorial Stadium next year.  And thirdly,  how to avoid a fiscal crisis in the Athletic Department.

Okay, Mike Thomas it's time to man-up and show some leadership here.   You need to take some bold actions or risk a decade of poor football.   I hope you realize that your job is on the line here.  Because another 3-4 years of this,  and you will be gone

To quote Mike Thomas last year concerning Coaches Zook and Weber:   "I'll make an assessment after the end of the season"   Well,  this miserable season is over,  and Thomas has some serious issues to address.  Really,  how do you assess Coach Beckman other than "Does not meet expectations"?

First,  how to revive some confidence in athletes and fans in the Illini football program?  Second, how to avoid having 35,000 empty seats in Memorial Stadium next year?  Third,  is how to avoid creating a financial crisis in the Athletic Department if you dismiss multiple football coaches?

Okay,  Mike Thomas,  this is why you get paid the big bucks.    You need to take some bold steps here because you probably realize that your job is on the line.  Because you will be gone in 4 years if you don't turn this football program around.

I agree with posters' above that AD Thomas must review the program using the same criteria he used for Coaches Zook and Weber: "What direction is the program headed? Is it up?"

That criteria alone should get Coach Beckman ousted immediately.

Bring in Coach Koenning as head coach, then give him maximum funds for 1 offensive co-ordinator and 1 defensive co-ordinator, and an excellent recruiter.

Here is the NCAA statistics link for the nations offensive team stats. From this list an excellent offensive co-ordinator must be found.

As the post-game commenters & hosts discussed, Reilly O'Toole should have played more the 2nd half of the season (if not the whole season).

Looking forward to the appropriate changes. Go Illini!

Your backed up near your end zone late in the game, you go into the shotgun and hand off to the back next to you for a safety. Coach, you told me a lot with this call. You told me you need to go. The kids deserve someone with a brain. You have not lived up to your duties. Your kids are not penalized for personal fouls. You sir are in way over your head. You told me about your ethics when you went behind the ref and sneaked tobacco in your mouth, which should have landed you being kicked out of the game, and when you did not, Thomas should have set you down the next game. You take your money please and leave town. You will not win more than one or two games next year. You could not beat more than 3 Mac Teams if you were in the league with the Illini. Get him out of there Thomas. Tate, at your age, and mine, we do not have time to goof around with the program. I think it time you stood up and forgot your trying to stay close to the program and write what needs to be written. Change it now. Bring in Tressel. NOW.
