Butkus joining former coach at FIU

Butkus joining former coach at FIU

Illinois offensive line coach Luke Butkus is leaving the school to become run-game coordinator at Florida International, a source close to the Illini program said.

Last week, Florida International hired former Illinois head coach Ron Turner to take over its football team. Butkus was a standout for Turner at Illinois, helping the Illini to the 2001 Big Ten title and a spot in the Sugar Bowl.

Butkus, who spent his early coaching career in the NFL, just completed his first season with Tim Beckman’s team.

Beckman now has two openings on his staff, the first created by the dismissal of co-offensive coordinator Chris Beatty. An announcement on the new offensive coordinator at Illinois should come next week.

What the hell is a "run game coordinator?".  Whatever it is, good luck coach.  As for a replacement, I hope Coach Beckman continues a trend of hiring older, more experienced coaches on his staff to compliment the younger ones.

Cannot blame Luke for moving to a situation which brings both familiarity (Ron Turner) and job security (Beckman will be gone in one/two years).  Best of luck, Luke.

Sounds like he took the easy way out, to rebuild our program isn't easy and will take time and apparently he couldn't take it. So good riddings, don't want anybody on the staff that's not gonna be loyal to Illinois and about trying their hardest to turn this program around. He couldn't take the heat so he got out the kitchen, I have no respect for a man who quits before the job is done, and it isn't like he made that much of a difference anyway. His recruiting was subpar and the O-line situation is no better.

Sounds like the new offensive coordinator may want to bring in his own people.

I can't fault Butkus for leaving.  The current coaching staff may not survive and his long-term prospects with Turner are probably better.  If Beckman has a bad season in 2013 he might be fired which means that Butkus would be looking for a job anyway.  Besides, maybe he was feeling heat right now because of the poor performance of the O. L. We don't know the behind the scenes situation.  It would be unfair to criticize Butkus for choosing to leave without knowing the details. I wish him success.  I do hate to see his name not associated w/IL FB.
