It's official: Bellamy promoted

Illinois football coach Tim Beckman has promoted former Illini receiver Mike Bellamy from assistant director of player personnel to receivers coach. Former Illini Jeff Finke talked about the move on Monday's "News-Gazette Sports Page."

Bellamy replaces Billy Gonzales who left this month for Mississippi State.

Beckman on Wednesday praised Bellamy’s knowledge of the receiver position.

In a statement, Bellamy said he maintains great pride in Illinois’ football program.

Bellamy played for the Illini in 1988 and ‘89 before playing several seasons in the NFL. He’s worked as assistant coach at Clark-Atlanta University and at a Georgia high school.

Beckman’s staff has turned over at several positions following his team’s 2-10 record last season.
