Illini offer Sherfield

Trent Sherfield can add Illinois to his offer list.

The Danville junior quarterback and free safety received a scholarship offer from the state school located roughly 30 minutes from his hometown on Saturday.

That ups the total scholarship offers for the 6-foot-2-inch, 185-pound athlete to Illinois State, Indiana and Northern Illinois. Cincinnati, Nevada and Vanderbilt have also expressed strong interest in Sherfield, who has said he’d like to make a decision after Danville’s season ends this fall.

“I’ve been to a couple games (at Illinois) and a couple junior days,” said Sherfield, whose lead recruiter is Illinois defensive line coach Greg Colby, a Danville alum who played for the Vikings in the early 1970s. “I’ve had lunch with the coaches. I like the academics (at Illinois). I know it’s a really tough school to get in to, (but) the coaching staff treats everybody like family.”

Once again, no real reporting. Is the kid to be a safety or QB? Is he any good? What measurables could be offered here to suggest he is fast or has mediocre speed, for example? Has he played safety at Danville? Sleepy Gazoo folks love to applaud an offer or signing, but actually digging into the story cuts into their Esquire ego time.
