Asmussen on Lunt: 'Perfect kid to lead your program'

We asked longtime football beat writer Bob Asmussen for his take on Wes Lunt’s decision to transfer to Illinois:

At a time when most things seem down, this is a big hit for Tim Beckman’s program. It’s the kind of uptick the program hasn’t experienced since the commitments of Arrelious Benn and Martez Wilson, which ultimately led Ron Zook to the Rose Bowl. Lunt is that good of a quarterback. When I visited Lunt in Rochester for our All-State Player of the Year story, he seemed like the perfect kid to lead your program: Smart, humble, rocket arm, great work ethic. While there are no guarantees, Lunt’s arrival makes it cool again to be an Illini. Expect some of the blue-chippers — especially on offense — to give Beckman a closer look.
