Counting down the 50 most important Illini
No. 48: Vontrell Williams, defensive tackle
Why he’s important: He’s a big body. At a position where big bodies are in high demand. And he has a chance to contribute on a defensive line that is not bursting with returning starters. Seeing the success former Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget had at Illinois was a key reason in drawaing the red-shirt freshman to Memorial Stadium. After not playing last year, Williams will likely see the field at times this season. If he can produce at all, it’s a boost for a positional group that has players who have not played much at Illinois. A good August for Williams could go a long way towards how much he contributes this fall.
Fast fact: Tim Beckman extended an offer to the Chicago Mt. Carmel product when he was at Toledo before Williams, who had 11 offers, picked Illinois.
