42 days to Camp Rantoul
Counting down the 50 most important Illini
No. 42: Kenny Knight, wide receiver
Why he’s important: Has the size to possibly become a difference-maker. Especially in the red zone. The Illini struggled to score touchdowns from anywhere on the field last season, but a nice, big target is appealing to any quarterback. After a red-shirt season in 2011, the 6-foot-4 Knight — the tallest wide receiver on the roster — grabbed five passes for 52 yards last season. He caught his first career pass at Arizona State and had his most productive game in the 35-7 loss against Penn State, hauling in three receptions for 30 yards. He will have to vie for playing time with Ryan Lankford, Martize Barr, Miles Osei and others, but a productive Camp Rantoul could help Knight see the field more in 2013. Bill Cubit needs wide receivers to step up, and Knight could fall into this category.
Fast fact: The Detroit native picked Illinois ahead of offers from Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and others on New Year’s Eve day in 2010.
