Domer commits to Illinois

Illinois has its first running back in the Class of 2014.

Matt Domer of Chicago Mt. Carmel gave a verbal commitment to Tim Beckman and the Illini on Tuesday afternoon.

He becomes the eighth player to pledge to Illinois in the last four months, and fourth in-state player.

Illinois offensive coordinator Bill Cubit and Illinois running backs coach Tim Salem were the lead recruiters on Domer, who chose Illinois ahead of seven other offers.

Domer, who visited the Illinois campus on Monday night and committed around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday before heading back to Chicago, said he had narrowed down his list of schools to Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Syracuse.

“I was really talking to Coach Beckman a lot, and they stressed to me that they needed me to be an in-state player who came to Illinois,” said Domer, who rushed for 1,370 yards on 155 carries and scored 20 touchdowns last fall for the Class 8A state champions. “They really, really gave me the attention that I liked. I was always told to pick a school that wants you and you want them back. I could definitely see that with Illinois.”

Domer joins defensive lineman Tito Odenigbo from Centerville (Ohio), center Nick Allegretti from Lincoln-Way East, wide receiver Mike Dudek from Neuqua Valley, quarterback Chayce Crouch from Newark (Ohio) Catholic, linebacker Austin Roberts from Rice Lake (Wis.), linebacker Henry McGrew from Blue Valley (Kan.) and wide receiver Malik Turner from Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin as the recruits Beckman has landed so far in the Class of 2014.
