Counting down the 50 most important Illini
No. 37: Caleb Day, defensive back
Why he’s important: The dual-threat from Darby (Ohio) will focus solely on just defense during his first season at Illinois. Which could help him out in seeing playing time during the 2013 campaign. He comes from a staunch high school program in Ohio that went 11-1 last season while he contributed 45 tackles, five interceptions and two fumble recoveries last fall. If he contributes even half those numbers this season, it’s a succesful debut for one of Tim Beckman’s signature recruits in the Class of 2013. He’s a big, physical player who will likely find his calling either at a free safety or strong safety position. That is, if he doesn’t make the move to wide receiver at some point during his time with the Illini.
Fast fact: Day, a four-star recruit, chose Illinois last summer over schools such as Arkansas, Cincinnati, Louisville and Ohio State, among others.
