DuVernois makes cut

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois punter Justin DuVernois is on the Ray Guy Award radar.

The junior from Plantation, Fla., was one of 25 punters named to the award's preseason watch list on Wednesday.

DuVernois averaged 41.9 yards per punt last season on 73 punts, and 19 landed inside the 20-yard line. His average ranked fourth in the Big Ten last year and 41st nationally. This after an inconsistent freshman season at times in which he averaged 38.3 yards per punt.

DuVernois is one of three Big Ten punters on the watch list, joining Michigan State junior Mike Sadler and Purdue senior Cody Webster.

Louisiana Tech punter Ryan Allen won the 2012 and 2011 Ray Guy Awards. The 10 semifinalists for the award will be unveiled in early November before the three finalists are named on Nov. 25. The winner will be announced Dec. 12.
