UI grade vs. Cincy: A

UI grade vs. Cincy: A

Staff writer Jeff Huth's take on the Illini's 45-17 win against Cincinnati on Saturday:

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Nathan Scheelhaase

Is this really the same Illini quarterback who finished the 2012 season with four touchdown passes in 10 games? The senior matched that total at Cincinnati’s expense while throwing for 300-plus yards in back-to-back games for the first time in his college career.

OFFENSE

Illinois A

Cincinnati C+

Give Bill Cubit the Big Ten offensive coordinator of the year award now. His unit has scored 40-plus points in two straight games. The Illini last did so in 2010.

DEFENSE

Illinois B+

Cincinnati D-

Tim Banks’ Illini unit was in bend-but-don’t break mode. And that third-quarter goal-line stand will stand with the best in program history.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Illinois B

Cincinnati C

Nothing out of the ordinary here except for Illini punt returns. Miles Osei and V’Angelo Bentley combined to average 13.2 yards on five returns.

OVERALL

Illinois A

Cincinnati D+

If the Illini earn this same grade next week against Washington, the party on Green State will last all night.

Give Cubit the award now? After only two non-conference games? More cheerleading.
