Illini grade vs. Sparty: F

Illini grade vs. Sparty: F

Player of the Game: Connor Cook, Michigan State

In the first three quarters, he hit 14 of 15 passes. In the wind. Impressive. He had plenty of help, both from his receivers and the Illinois defense. If the Spartans want to compete with Ohio State in the pending Big Ten title game, Cook needs to be more of an offensive leader and less of a game manager. Saturday was a good start.

Offense

Michigan State A-

Illinois D-

The Spartans were better than most expected, running and throwing the ball well. The Illini had a chance early, but couldn’t get out of their own way. The Illini offense had its poorest showing of the season.

Defense

Michigan State A+

Illinois  F

The Spartans were as good as advertised. Illini had trouble moving the ball after an early spurt. Hopefully, Michigan State’s defenders won’t think every game will be this easy.

Special teams

Michigan State B

Illinois D

Hey, Illinois hit a field goal. And actually led for a few seconds. Not much nice to say about the team, and we were always told that if you can’t say anything nice....

Overall

Michigan State A

Illinois F

Here’s a suggestion for Illinois fans: Adopt Eastern Illinois for the rest of the season. Dino Babers’ Panthers are going to the postseason. The same can’t be said for Tim Beckman’s Illini.
