Asmussen's Top 50: No. 47 Penn State

Bob Asmussen counts down his top 50 college football teams this upcoming season.

No. 47: Penn State

Coach: James Franklin

2013 record: 7-5

Projected 2014 record: 8-4

Circle the date: Oct. 25 vs. Ohio State

Why No. 47: Bill O’Brien didn’t leave the Nittany Lions without players before fleeing to the NFL. And first-year coach Franklin benefits. Christian Hackenberg set all sorts of quarterback records as a freshman in Happy Valley. Bigger and stronger, he will only get better. He needs help from the receivers, who have to replace early NFL departee Allen Robinson. The Creamery soft schedule gives Penn State a chance to build some early confidence.
