Asmussen's Top 50: No. 34 Maryland

Asmussen's Top 50: No. 34 Maryland

Bob Asmussen counts down his top 50 college football teams this upcoming season.

No. 34: Maryland

Coach: Randy Edsall

2013 record: 7-6

Projected 2014 record: 7-5

Circle the date: Oct. 4 vs. Ohio State

Why No. 34: The new guys aren’t going to win the Big Ten. In fact, they will have a hard time finishing in the upper half of the East. But the schedule is set up for success, with nonconference games against James Madison, South Florida and Syracuse. The Big Ten schedule makers were unkind, loading up Iowa and Wisconsin from the West, At least Rutgers and Indiana are permanently on the schedule. Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley has talented returnees on his side of the ball, led by quarterback C.J. Brown. The defense is at its best up front. The problems for football are minor compared to the mess that is Maryland men’s basketball. So, another bowl trip will be considered a success.
