Asmussen's Top 50: No. 29 Louisville

Asmussen's Top 50: No. 29 Louisville

Bob Asmussen continues his countdown of his picks for the Top 50 college football teams this fall.

No. 29: Louisville

Coach: Bobby Petrino

2013 record: 12-1

Projected 2014 record: 8-4

Circle the date: Oct. 30 vs. Florida State

Why No. 29:  The two most important parts of last year’s team — which was a close loss to Central Florida away from a perfect season — are gone. Teddy Bridgewater left for the big bucks in the NFL. Charlie Strong left for the big bucks at Texas. The school made a risky hire, picking Bobby Petrino off the do-over pile. After a bitter departure from Arkansas, Petrino gets to run another big-time program. Hopefully, he sticks around in Louisville if he wins big. Playing in the ACC will be more of a challenge than the American. New quarterback Will Gardner showed his potential in the spring game, throwing for more than 500 yards. DeVante Parker is a star at receiver and the running backs are talented. Louisville might need to score a lot of points because the defense returns just four starters. The schedule is odd with the Cardinals closing the season against Notre Dame and Kentucky.
