11:15 a.m. today:

Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas weighs in on Tom Michael's hire at EIU.

“I am very excited for Tom and his family as he takes on this outstanding opportunity as Director of Athletics at Eastern Illinois University. Tom has a long history at the University of Illinois as both a student-athlete and administrator, and has played an integral part in many of the success stories during his tenure. He has worked very hard over his career with this goal in mind, and it is very satisfying to see Tom get this position. I’ll be working with Tom and his staff during this transition to ensure we don’t miss a beat with the State Farm Center project and other areas of his responsibilities. I wish him nothing but the best of luck as he moves in to lead EIU athletics.”

“We are excited to begin the next chapter in Eastern Illinois Panther Athletics with Tom Michael as our new athletic director,” said Dan Nadler, EIU Vice President for Student Affairs who has also served as the Interim Athletic Director since Burke’s departure.  “He is a well-rounded athletic administrator who brings experience as both a former Division I athlete and administrator that will benefit EIU Athletics.  Over the course of the phone and on-campus interviews you could see that Tom is someone that will be totally committed to the academic and athletic development of EIU’s student-athletes.”

“I am thrilled to be named the Director of Athletics at Eastern Illinois University.  It is with great anticipation that I look forward to working with the coaches, staff and student-athletes involved with EIU Panther Athletics,” said Michael.   I feel the 18 years of employment and four years as a student-athlete at the University of Illinois, have prepared me for this opportunity.  I leave Illinois with a tremendous amount of respect for the training and experiences it has provided for me both as a Division I student-athlete and as a Division I athletic administrator.”

Eastern Illinois University will name Tom Michael as its new athletic director Monday, according to a source close to the Eastern Illinois program.

Michael is currently a senior associate athletic director at Illinois and is in charge of the renovation project at the State Farm Center.

An official announcement from Eastern Illinois is expected Monday. EIU was in line for a new athletic director after Barbara Burke left Charleston to become the deputy athletic director at Tulane.

This will be the first job away from Illinois for Michael, who has served in a variety of roles for the school. Michael, one of three finalists, interviewed in Charleston on Tuesday.

The other finalists were former Northern Iowa athletic director and longtime college basketball official Rick Hartzell and Jim Sarra, the current deputy athletic director at Texas-San Antonio.

Michael could not be reached Sunday evening for comment.
