Asmussen's Top 50: No. 24 Texas
Bob Asmussen continues his countdown of Top 50 college football teams this fall.
No. 24: Texas
Coach: Charlie Strong
2013 record: 8-5
Projected 2014 record: 9-3
Circle the date: Oct. 11 vs. Oklahoma
Why No. 24: The Longhorns desperately needed some new blood and Strong seems like a good match. He might not have the charm of former coach Mack Brown, but his body of work as both a coordinator and head coach is impressive. Because of his background on defense, the first questions are always going to be about the offense. One-time (for about a month) Illinois assistant coach Joe Wickline is the offensive coordinator after building his reputation at Oklahoma State. He will work with quarterback coach Shawn Watson, who did a great job with Teddy Bridgewater at Louisville. The best player on offense might be receiver Jaxon Shipley. Wickline needs to do fast work with the line, which must to replace three starters. The defense welcomes back seven starters. End Cedric Reed is the best of the bunch. The schedule is no picnic with an early game against UCLA.
No. 25: Michigan
