Asmussen's Top 50: No. 8 UCLA

Asmussen's Top 50: No. 8 UCLA

Bob Asmussen reveals the latest college football team in his Top 50 countdown this fall.

No. 8: UCLA

Coach: Jim Mora Jr.

2013 record: 10-3

Projected 2014 record: 10-2

Circle the date: Oct. 11 vs. Oregon

Why No. 8: Did anybody else think it was a good idea when the Bruins hired Mora? Me either, especially after Illinois beat UCLA in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. But Mora has the team rolling now. If the Bruins can survive a nasty schedule, they have a chance for a special season. And a spot in the national semifinals isn’t out of the question. Quarterback Brett Hundley put a smile on Mora’s face when he decided to return for another season. Hundley has plenty of help, with talent at receiver and three starters back on the offensive line. The defense is led by two-way player Myles Jack, who helps out at running back when he isn’t tackling everybody. If he gets off to a good start and the team wins a lot, Jack will be a part of the Heisman Trophy conversation. The schedule could work against the Bruins, who have a nonconference game against Texas and Pac-12 games with Arizona State, Oregon, Southern Cal, Washington and Stanford. Wicked.
