Top 50 teams in 2018: No. 43, Purdue

Coach: Jeff Brohm

2017 record: 7-6

Projected 2018 record: 8-4

Circle the date: Oct. 20 vs. Ohio State

Bowl trip: Pinstripe

Why No. 43: The basketball has always been good in West Lafayette, but Brohm has them talking football. An inspired hire, the one-time Illinois assistant led the Boilers to a bowl in his first season. Now, the school wants more. And will likely get it. Brohm has a nice problem: Too many good quarterbacks. David Blough is back and would normally be a lock to start. But Elijah Sindelar stepped in after Blough got hurt last season and led Purdue to a strong finish, including a bowl win. Four starters are back on the offensive line. Always a good thing. Brohm is looking for more explosiveness at receiver and might get it from his incoming freshmen. Linebacker Markus Bailey is the top returning defender, coming off a seven-sack season. The early schedule is friendly, with four straight home games against Northwestern, Eastern Michigan, Missouri and Boston College at the start of the season. Penn State and Michigan are off the Boilermakers' schedule this fall, too.
