Why No. 13: The positivity in Ann Arbor picked up when the NCAA allowed quarterback Shea Patterson to be immediately eligible. The former Mississippi standout transferred to Michigan and sought a waiver. Last season, he threw for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns. Patterson is the missing piece of what is expected to be a productive offense. ... Running back Karan Higdon returns after gaining 994 yards and 11 TDs. ... Don Brown's defense brings back eight starters, with defensive ends Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich leading the way. ... Devin Bush and Khaleke Hudson are solid linebackers. ... The schedule might be the biggest issue for the Wolverines, who open at Notre Dame and have consecutive Big Ten games against Wisconsin, Michigan State and Penn State. They close at bitter rival Ohio State.

Last year's ranking: No. 7
