Bob Asmussen's Big Ten Power Poll: Sparty takes a dip

Bob Asmussen's Big Ten Power Poll: Sparty takes a dip

On Mondays throughout the season, our 30-year college football writer weighs in on his favorite conference:

1. Wisconsin (1)

Is there a more electric in-game tradition in college football than "Jump Around" at Camp Randall? None than I can think of.

2. Ohio State (2)

A college football expert I know, one who does not hand out praise easily, is a big fan of quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

3. Penn State (7)

How do you bounce back after a close call against a decided underdog? Pound your bitter rival Pitt for four quarters.

4. Maryland (3)

After they put up 45 to improve to 2-0, the Terrapins were this close to cracking my Top 25.

5. Iowa (5)

Fans waving to kids in the nearby hospital brings tears to my eyes. And so did Iowa's offense in a dull win against Iowa State.

6. Michigan (8)

Wolverines did a nice job to not let a Notre Dame hangover hurt them against Western Michigan. If anything, they were angrier.

7. Minnesota (11)

Time to give Fleck some credit after a close win against Fresno State. Antoine Winfield Jr. sealed the victory with a late INT.

8. Michigan State (6)

I stay up way too late and saw Arizona State pull off the stunner Saturday in Tempe. That's two bad games in a row for Sparty.

9. Northwestern (4)

An opening win against Purdue wasn't quite as impressive as first thought. Pat Fitzgerald's team struggled scoring against Duke.

10. Indiana (10)

Hoosiers might have found a star in freshman Stevie Scott, who ran for 204 yards in a Power 5 win over Virginia.

11. Nebraska (12)

First-year coach Scott Frost was not pleased when the loss to Colorado. But the bigger issue was QB Adrian Martinez's injury.

12. Illinois (13)

Lovie Smith has his second chance to start 3-0. Halfway to bowl eligibility would change the team's in-conference perception.

13. Rutgers (14)

Scarlet Knights excited their fans (both of them) with an opening win over Texas State. Then, kersplat (52-3 loss) at Ohio State.

14. Purdue (9)

It's OK to lose at home to Northwestern. It happens. It is not OK to lose at home to Eastern Michigan. Ever.
