First and 10: Asmussen's 10 top transfer receivers for the Illini

Our college football writer ranks the receivers in the transfer portal that Illinois should go after:

1. Darnell Salomon, South Florida

If you can't beat them, join them. He had five catches for 95 yards and two TDs in South Florida's win against Illinois at Soldier Field.

2. Marcus Simms, West Virginia

Despite missing time because of injury, he caught 46 passes for 699 yards and two touchdowns in 2018.

3. La'Michael Pettway, Arkansas

Arkansas native ranks among the best available receivers. Caught 30 passes for 499 yards and four touchdowns in 2018.

4. Velus Jones Jr., Southern Cal

One of the leading receivers for the Trojans, he caught 24 passes for 266 yards in 2018. Graduate transfer will be immediately eligible. Alabama native was recruited by former OC Tee Martin, who was fired after the season.

5. Keith Mixon, Mississippi State

Alabama native coming off an injury-plagued junior season. His 10 catches were the fewest of his career. He has five career touchdowns.

6. Brandon Polk, Penn State

He made seven starts in 2018, catching nine passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

7. Corey Reed, Louisville

The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder got off to a good start in 2017, catching eight passes for 145 yards. Georgian played in two games last season, but didn't have a catch.

8. Josh Imatorbhebhe, Southern Cal

Trojans receiver Trevon Sidney is already joining the Illini. Might as well make it Student Body East. Former four-star recruit will be immediately eligible and have two years left.

9. Keishawn Watson, Western Michigan

Wheaton native had 25 catches for 330 yards in 2018. He was even better as a sophomore with 41 grabs for 374 yards and seven scores.

10. Devin Butler, Syracuse

Maryland native had 47 catches the past two seasons, though his total dropped from 33 to 14 in 2018. A fresh start might be just what is needed.
