PARK RIDGE — The Illinois volleyball team swept Big Ten player of the week awards on Monday, with Laura DeBruler earning the honor on offense and Johannah Bangert being recognized on defense.
DeBruler recorded double-doubles in kills and digs in two matches last week. The sophomore outside hitter had 17 kills and 17 digs against Purdue before racking up 21 and 12, respectively, versus Michigan State. The award is DeBruler’s third this season and fifth of her career.
Bangert had nine block assists against the Boilermakers, helping limit Purdue to a .199 hitting percentage.
The sophomore middle blocker also had nine blocks, including one solo, against a Spartans team held to .199 hitting. Bangert is a two-time winner of the award this season.
Big win for Kennedy. No. 4 Jimmy Kennedy defeated No. 2 Jayson Ness of Minnesota 7-5 at 133 pounds in the 43rd annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
“Jimmy really gave a pretty dominating performance,” UI coach Mark Johnson said. “People didn’t really know what to do with Ness in the rankings since he moved up to 133 this year after having success at 125 last year, so this was a good match for Jimmy to wrestle.”
In men's golf:
Small receives honor. Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small was named Coach of the Mid-Season by Golf World.
Sophomore Scott Langley was named to the 12-man Mid-Season All-America team. The magazine also named Illinois its Biggest Surprise Team of the fall season.
In swimming and diving:
Novitsky signs eight. Sue Novitsky’s UI swimming and diving team signed eight athletes, including one national runner-up and three members with national experience.
The group of seven swimmers and one diver includes Centennial’s Alyssa Petruzzello. Erica Lynn, a home-schooled athlete from Swansea, placed second in the 200 breaststroke at the YMCA National Championships. The other signees: Sarah Coady of Hinsdale Central; Kimberly Kalenda of Cary Grove; Kathleen Knight of Normal U-High; Erin Lamb of Naperville Central; Erin Rodriguez of Buffalo Grove; and Lauren Wismer of Overland Park, Kan.
