Hackett, softball outlast Badgers
MADISON, Wis. — Meredith Hackett had two hits and two RBI as the Illinois softball team held off Wisconsin 4-2 Saturday in eight innings.
The Illini (20-17, 7-4 Big Ten) scored three times in the eighth. Kelley Wedel added two hits and two RBI, and Danielle Zymkowitz added two hits.
Pepper Gay (14-11) picked up the win in relief of Jackie Guy, allowing one run in 12/3 innings.
In women's golf:
Illini ninth. The Illini women's golf team was ninth heading into today's final round of the Big Ten Championships in Glencoe. The Illini shot 303 in the third round, topped by Samantha Sloan's 74. Ember Schuldt was tied for 26th at 15-over-par 231 to lead Illinois.
In men's golf:
Surge carries Illini. Illinois shot 1 under Saturday and moved within 1 stroke of leader Ohio State heading into today's final round of the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at Columbus, Ohio.
Illinois' Luke Guthrie and Scott Langley were tied for fourth at even-par 142, 4 shots behind leader Vince India of Iowa. Langley shot 4-under 67 Saturday.
In women's track and field:
Illini shine in field. Stephanie Richartz and Elizabeth Eitzen eclipsed the school record in the pole vault while finishing third and seventh, respectively, in the Polytan Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
Richartz cleared 13 feet, 1 3/4 inches. Eitzen finished at 12-8. The old record was 12-6.
Stephanie Morgan won the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 23.09 seconds, and Tamika Robinson was victorious in the 100 hurdles (13.70). Robinson took second in the 200 (24.21). Ashley Kelly (54.07) and Ryisha Boyd (54.48) finished 2-3 in the 400. Latoya Griffith was second in the 400 hurdles.
