IOWA CITY, Iowa — Illinois opened the Big Ten season by facing a two-goal halftime deficit against the host Hawkeyes.
Jenna Carosio and Shayla Mutz struck in the second half to help the No. 23 Illini to a 2-2 draw after a scoreless overtime against Iowa (8-0-1, 0-0-1).
“We put ourselves in the position to have to play 110 minutes,” Illinois (6-2-1, 0-0-1) coach Janet Rayfield said.
Nevolo impressive. Dennis Nevolo, who finished 4-0, was named MVP of the Illini Invitational for the second year in a row Sunday in Olympia Fields.
Nevolo, ranked No. 7 nationally, faced fellow unbeaten Tom Jomby of Kentucky in the final match. Nevolo won 6-3, 6-2.
The Illini finished the weekend 10-6 in singles overall and 1-3 in doubles.
Illini eighth. The Illini men’s golf team moved up one spot Sunday at the Illini Invitational, finishing in a tie for eighth place.
Mason Jacobs tied for 11th at 216, and Luke Guthrie tied for 15th at 217.
Kopinski takes fourth. Freshman Melissa Kopinski lost 7-5, 6-3 in the third-place match at the Duke Fab Four Invitional on Sunday in Cary, N.C.
