DiBernardo sparks Illini past Hoosiers
CHAMPAIGN — Vanessa DiBernardo scored twice as Illinois defeated Indiana 4-1 in a Big Ten women’s soccer match Friday night.
“It was just about her finding the right runs to make,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “She made a couple of great runs, and Niki Read and Marissa Holden found her with the ball. The timing of what she did to get those two goals were what really made it happen. In all honesty, she had two people deliver her great balls.”
DiBernardo’s second goal broke a 1-1 tie in the second half.
“Our ball movement and our movement off the ball were both good,” Rayfield said. “We struggle sometimes to find the back of the net, and we still have to be a little better defensively. We gave up a goal right at the start of the second half, and we do not want to do that. To answer and get three goals is a good response from us.”
Marissa Mykines and Megan Pawloski added goals for the Illini, who improved to 7-4-1 and 1-2-1 in the Big Ten.
Sloan leads golfers. Senior Samantha Sloan carded a 1-over-par 73, leading Illinois to fourth place after the first round of the Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational on Friday in Lexington, Ky. The Illini were at 318 and trailed tournament leader Central Florida by 7 strokes.
