Penn State blanks soccer team
CHAMPAIGN — Penn State scored in the opening minute, sending the 11th-ranked Nittany Lions to a runaway 4-0 victory Sunday against the Illinois soccer team.
Penn State led 3-0 at halftime, outshooting the Illini (5-4-1, 2-1 Big Ten) 10-4.
“Once we settled down and started to play with confidence, we did some good things and created some good looks at the goal,” Illini coach Janet Rayfield said. “Against a talented team like Penn State, we need to be more accurate with those opportunities.”
In men’s golf:
Illini win again. Illinois improved to 2-0 in fall tournaments Sunday, cruising to a 21-stroke victory at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate championship in Normal.
Mason Jacobs tied for third at 5 over to lead the Illini.
Illinois closed with an 8-over-par total, but had plenty of cushion for the win.
“The goal was to go over there and win the tournament and I thought our players took care of business,” Illinois coach Mike Small said.
In women’s golf:
Solid finish for Illini. Illinois shot up the leaderboard with the best round of the day, finishing 3 strokes out of first in a tie for third at the Wolverine Invite in Ann Arbor, Mich.
“Today was a step forward for us,” Illinois coach Renee Slone said. “It was the first tournament of the year where our final round has been our best round of the tournament. Hopefully that is a sign that we are applying the lessons that we’re learning.”
Michelle Mayer and Ember Schuldt tied for sixth.
