OLYMPIA FIELDS — The Ryder Cup in nearby Medinah showcased the world’s best golfers on the world’s biggest stage.
The Olympia Fields Invitational had its share of the best collegiate golfers playing one of the most challenging courses.
Illinois freshman Charlie Danielson was up to the challenge.
Danielson shot a final-round 67 on the South Course and tied for 12th Tuesday.
“For a freshman to come here in this field and on this golf course and respond like that is pretty impressive,” Illini coach Mike Small said. “Charlie is coming along fine. He has a lot of talent, and we’re excited about his future.”
The Illini finished in a three-way tie for 10th in the team standings.
“The tournament gave us nothing but a good experience,” Danielson said. “It showed where we are both individually and as a team. We have nowhere to go but forward from here.”
Arkansas won the team title by 13 strokes, and Florida was the runner-up.
Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers repeated as the individual champion.
