Kopinskis both make doubles finals
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Illinois sophomores Tim Kopinski and Farris Gosea advanced to the doubles championship of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional on Sunday.
Kopinski and freshman Jared Hiltzik made it to the semifinals in singles, giving the Illini two of the final four players remaining.
“The highlight of the day was Kopinski and Farris and the purpose that they demonstrated during doubles,” Illini coach Brad Dancer said. “They’re very clear with what they’re doing, and they’re not going away from that, which is what we talk about all the time. I’m very pleased with their effort today.”
Doubles team in title match. Rachael White and Melissa Kopinski advanced to the doubles championship at the USTA/ITA Regional at Atkins Tennis Center.
Soccer blasts Nebraska. Shayla Mutz scored a pair of first-half goals on her Senior Day to power the Illini soccer team to a 4-1 victory against visiting Nebraska.
Senior Niki Read and junior Vanessa DiBernardo also found the back of the net for the Illini.
Golfers in third. Illinois’ Brian Campbell is in sixth place after firing a 1-under 71 in the first-round of the Isleworth Collegiate in Windermere, Fla., leading the Illini to third place in a loaded field.
“To be in this position is what you want after the first day. We believe in ourselves,” UI coach Mike Small said.
UI freshmen David Kim (T-seventh, 72) and Charlie Danielson (T-16th, 73) also played well.
