Buford-Bailey rates award
CHAMPAIGN — Illinois’ Tonja Buford-Bailey was named the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches’ Association’s Midwest Region Head Women’s Coach of the Year on Monday.
“It’s great to receive this honor,” Buford-Bailey said. “It makes me feel even better knowing that I received this award because my peers voted for me. I’m really honored.”
Buford-Bailey led her squad to its first Big Ten indoor title since the 1996 season.
In men's track & field:
UI assistant honored. Illinois’ Adrian Wheatley was named the USTFCCCA’s Midwest Region Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year on Monday.
“I am so proud of Coach Wheatley,” UI coach Mike Turk said. “He is an outstanding coach and person. Coach Wheatley has brought another dimension to our program, and I am happy he is being recognized for his outstanding work.”
Polz among top seeds. Eight Illini wrestlers earned pre-seeds for the Big Ten Championships, the league office announced Monday.
Conrad Polz (165 pounds) earned a No. 2 seed. Jesse Delgado (125) and Mario Gonzalez (197) claimed No. 3 seeds. Daryl Thomas (133) was seeded fifth, and Jordan Blanton (174) and Tony Dallago (184) earned No. 6 seeds. Redshirt freshman Caleb Ervin claimed a No. 7 seed, and heavyweight Christopher Lopez was seeded 11th.
In men's golf:
Illini lead. Senior Mason Jacobs and freshman Thomas Detry were tied for ninth place Monday, leading Illinois to a 7-stroke advantage after two rounds of the 28th annual Louisiana Classics in Lafayette, La.
The Illini totaled 579 in blustery conditions. Kansas was second at 586.
