Delgado, Polz remain in NCAA title hunt
DES MOINES, Iowa — Illinois’ Jesse Delgado (seeded second at 125 pounds) and Conrad Polz (seeded seventh at 165) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships after winning their second-round wrestling matches Thursday night.
Jordan Blanton (174), Tony Dallago (184) and Mario Gonzalez (197) stayed alive in the consolation bracket.
Illinois was tied for 12th place with 11.5 points. The third session begins at 10 a.m. Friday.
Delgado defeated Brown’s William Watterson by technical fall, 20-5, in his second-round match. Delgado will face No. 7 Nathan Kraisser of North Carolina on Friday.
Polz defeated Iowa State’s Michael Moreno 5-2 in the second round and was scheduled to face No. 1 David Taylor of Penn State on Friday.
In men’s golf:
Pieters leads event. Junior Thomas Pieters carded a 6-under-par 65 to take the first-round lead at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Illini were tied for sixth place, 8 strokes behind leader Tulsa.
