CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after claiming the 100 meters and placing second in the 400 hurdles at the Texas State Elite Meet, the league office announced Wednesday.
Spencer posted the nation’s second-fastest time (57.34 seconds) in the 400 hurdles. Arkansas’ Sparkle McKnight was first (56.62) in the same race.
Spencer was timed in 11.46 in the 100, a personal best.
In men's track & field:
Joseph feted. Illinois junior Vanier Joseph won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.89 at the Big Ten/SEC Challenge and was named the league’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Joseph’s time is the nation’s fifth fastest this season.
In men's golf:
Pieters honored. Illinois junior Thomas Pieters was selected as Big Ten Golfer of the Week after finishing third at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz.
Pieters carded a 6-under-par 65 in the first round to lead the tournament.
Game switched. Illinois’ softball team moved Friday night’s scheduled game against Nebraska to Saturday because of recent snow accumulation.
The Big Ten teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.
