U.S. Open pairings announced

An unprecedented number of former Illini are in the field for next week’s U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. First- and second-round pairings were announced Friday:

Steve Stricker

In his group: Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley

— Avis pitchman is the only one in the group yet to win a major. Has three top-six finishes in 17 Open starts

Scott Langley

In his group:Chris Williams and Morgan Hoffman

Langley can expect to play in front of big crowds. The group playing in back of this pairing includes Tiger Woods

Luke Guthrie

In his group: Joe Ogilvie and TBD

Expect plenty of basketball talk between Guthrie and Ogilvie, who played his college golf at Duke

D.A. Points

In his group:Bo Van Pelt and Kevin Streelman

Cashing in big-time on Tour, Points hasn’t done much in three previous Open starts (best finish: 69th in 2008)
