Small nears major reward

SUNRIVER, Ore. — Illinois men’s golf coach Mike Small was tied for fifth after three rounds of the PGA Professional National Championship on Tuesday.

Small carded a third-round 72 and was at 211, 4 strokes behind leaders Chip Sullivan and Mark Sheftic.

The top 20 finishers Wednesday will earn spots in the PGA Championship in August at Oak Hill in Rochester, N.Y.

Sheftic birdied the final two holes Tuesday at rainy Sunriver Resort.

In women's golf:

Postillion leads UI charge. Illini golfer Samantha Postillion opened with a 75 Tuesday at the Illinois State Women’s Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton. Former Illini Nora Lucas also had a 75, and current Illini players Ember Schuldt and Michelle Mayer were at 77 and 82, respectively. Winnetka’s Elizabeth Szokol and Naperville’s Bing Singhsumalee led with first-round 73s.
