Deere tracking: Luke Guthrie
Class of 2012
Status report: The 23-year-old from Quincy probably couldn’t have asked for a better rookie season. So far, at least. He earned his PGA Tour card after a solid performance last year on the Web.com circuit. He has golfed in 21 tournaments this year, making the cut in 13 events. He qualified for his first U.S. Open but did not make the cut. His best outing came at the Honda Classic in early March in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., where he placed third. Finishing behind Michael Thompson and Geoff Ogilvy allowed Guthrie to take home $408,000, his biggest payday on the tour. Guthrie could surpass $1 million in winnings this weekend. He’s currently 67th on the money list at $973,026.
Deere tracking: Folks in the Guthrie cheering section this week would like a near repeat of what Guthrie accomplished last year. Playing in only his second PGA tournament, Guthrie tied for fifth. He went into the clubhouse on last year’s final day of the tournament with a blistering 7-under-par, briefly giving him the overall lead before he tied with Stricker.
Outlook: His impressive showing last year should put Guthrie on the short list of potential contenders. He obviously has fond memories of TPC Deere Run. If he can keep up with the low scores his colleagues will post, another monster payday could take place for Guthrie.
