Small tied for first at Illinois PGA

Mike Small has won the Illinois PGA Championship a record nine times. After one round of the 91st edition of the venerable tournament, the University of Illinois men’s golf coach is very much in the running to add another crown to his resume.

Small shot a 2-under-par 69 Monday at Olympia Fields Country Club to grab a share of the lead with Curtis Malm and Ryan Sharp. Small was 4 under through his first 10 holes but made bogeys on Nos. 13 and 18.

“I hit a lot of good shots today but unfortunately hit too many bad ones, too,” said Small, 47. “If I had been in command of my game, it would have been a lot better.”

Former Illini Garrett Chaussard, the head pro at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lamont, was tied for 14th after carding a 73. Champaign Country Club pro Lance Olson shot a 74 and was tied for 23rd.

AJ Shannon, the head pro at Turtle Run Golf Club in Danville, finished with an 80 and was tied for 93rd. Danville Country Club pro Ryan Moore was tied for 105th with an 81.
