Flaws & Co. rally for soccer victory

CHAMPAIGN — Indiana State led 1-0 at intermission Friday against Illinois in a nonconference soccer match, but the Illini didn’t panic.

Jannelle Flaws, Vanessa DiBernardo and Allie Osoba each scored in the second half, leading Illinois to a 3-2 victory.

“We started to play better soccer in the second half,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “Indiana State really came out and put us under pressure, and our team didn’t really show up ready to play. When we settled down, moved the ball and just did the normal little things that you do when you’re ready to play, it made a big difference. We’ve just got to do a better job of coming out ready to play.”

Flaws capped the UI’s scoring with her team-leading eighth goal. Illinois improved to 4-2-1.

“At the end we sort of let them back in, so we really have to demand more of ourselves in terms of our intensity from start to finish,” Rayfield said.

In men’s golf:
Hauter shows way.
Jonathan Hauter carded a 1-over-par 71 and was tied for fifth place Friday after the first round of the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational.

The Illini (295) were tied for sixth in the team standings, 14 strokes behind Alabama.
