Soccer closes nonconference with shutout

CHAMPAIGN — Reagan Robishaw and Megan Pawloski each scored a pair of goals to lift Illinois to a 4-0 victory Sunday against Florida International. Freshman Claire Wheatley and Lauren Parkin combined for the shutout in goal for Illinois, making one save.

The Illini (5-2-1), who outshot the Panthers 29-7, begin conference matches Friday at Ohio State.

“A shutout feels good,” coach Janet Rayfield said. “It’s been a long time since we felt what it’s like to have a clean sheet. We kept the ball a little bit better, got a lot of players in the game and I told them after the game, this has got to be the standard. We’ve got to be able to play that way on both sides for 90 minutes, especially when it’s Big Ten conference play.”

Illinois led 1-0 at halftime while improving to 4-0 at home this season.

Men’s golfers sixth. Thomas Detry tied for sixth individually, and the Illini  did the same as a team at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday.

Illinois (873) finished 24 strokes behind champion Alabama, the No. 1-ranked team.

“We didn’t finish as well as we can, that’s something we need to improve on,” Illini coach Mike Small said. “But to come out today and shoot a couple over (par) as a team and move up to sixth place after the first couple days we had is encouraging.”

Kopinski shines. Tim Kopinski, ranked 121st, wrapped up a 4-0 run at the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday with a victory against No. 117 Justin Shane of Virginia.

Illinois’ No. 17 Jared Hiltzik lost to No. 31 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame to go 3-1 on the weekend.
