Detry, Illini golfers victorious

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. — Illinois sophomore Thomas Detry notched a 3-stroke victory for his first career tournament title Sunday, leading the Illini to a runaway victory at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.

Detry ended at 4-under 209 as the Illini swept the top four spots at the event. Detry beat Brian Campbell (212), David Kim (214) and Charlie Danielson (215).

“It’s pretty awesome,” Detry said. “I played well the whole tournament. I was plus-3 through 11 yesterday morning and finished minus-2, so that was good to finish strong and that gave me some momentum to get a 2-under round in the afternoon. I missed a couple of short putts today, but overall it was a solid round.”

Illinois was 8 under for the tournament, beating Auburn by 33 strokes.

The Illini were competing without coach Mike Small, who was in England helping the U.S. team retain the PGA Cup. Great Britain & Ireland rallied to earn a 13-13 tie, but the defending champs get to keep the cup. Small lost his singles match 4 & 3 on Sunday.
