Campbell, Guthrie earn Open invites

Illinois senior-to-be Brian Campbell on Monday qualified to play in this month’s U.S. Open, picking up one of the five available spots during sectional qualifying in Daly City, Calif.

Also qualifying for the year’s second major championship, being played at Pinehurst June 12-15, was former Illini and current PGA Tour member Luke Guthrie.

Campbell, the 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year, fired a round of 67 at Olympic Club’s Ocean Course and followed that up with a 70 at Lake Merced to finish tied for fourth place.

Guthrie, playing in Columbus, Ohio, shot 68 at Scioto Country Club and 70 at Brookside to finish in a tie for fourth at his sectional.

Campbell and Guthrie will join former Illini Steve Stricker and D.A. Points in the field at Pinehurst.

Among the former Illini playing in qualifiers Monday who failed to make the U.S. Open field was Scott Langley, who came up short in a playoff in Memphis, Tenn. Langley, though, is the first alternate after shooting rounds of 69 and 68 at Colonial.
