Davan leads Burge at Illinois Open
GLENVIEW — Hoopeston’s Michael Davan carded a first-round 66 to take a 1-stroke lead over Bloomington’s Alex Burge on Monday at the 65th Illinois Open.
Davan, who played at Bismarck-Henning High School and Parkland College before transferring to IUPUI, was at 6 under par heading to the second round.
“This tournament’s been on my calendar the whole year,” said the 25-year-old Davan, who made a double bogey on the final hole last year that cost him the championship. “It affected me more afterward than I thought it would. It’s been fuel for me.”
Davan carded a 5-under 31 on the back nine, his first nine holes, and added a 1-over 35 on his inward nine.
Burge, an Illini golfer, said his round was “as boring as I would like. It’s what Coach (Mike Small) says. One shot at a time. You want to make it boring.”
Postillion enjoys victory. Illini women’s golfer Sam Postillion recently won the Northern Illinois Women’s Amateur Championship in Lemont.
Postillion totaled 136 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club, winning by 4 strokes.
“Since I have not won a tournament in over a year, it felt great to finally get the win this past week,” Postillion said. “I was very happy with how I played both days and am excited to head to the Northwest Women’s Open. It will be a very competitive field, mainly comprised of pros, so I’m glad I have a lot of confidence in my game now. Just like last week, my goal is to just have fun, stay patient for birdies and hope that good things result.”
